311 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TYWONEK, Richard M. Richard was born in Warsaw, Poland on April 7, 1928. He joined the Resistance Army in November 1941 and some of his duties included the sabotage of Railway installations and transport equipment; gathering intelligence on German military units and industry in Poland; locating the German Command for the Eastern Front and the distribution to the public of BBC News gathered by secret Radio Stations. He was wounded twice during the Warsaw Uprising against the Germans and was taken POW to the Concentration Camp Sachsenhausen where he was forced to work on German railways. Richard was discharged in January 1945. For his service, he was awarded the Resistance (AK) Cross, the Warsaw Uprising Cross, the Fighter for Independence Cross and he was a 2nd Lieutenant. Richard has been a member of Mount Hamilton Legion Branch 163 for six years. VALLEAU, John H. John was born on January 17, 1925 in Gananoque, Leeds, Ontario. He joined the Navy on September 27, 1943 and spent a consistent amount of his service on HMCS Uganda as a Torpedo Man on the high seas and the Pacific Ocean. He also served on HMCS York from September 27 to November 2, 1943 as well as on the Stadacona from May 27, 1944. After his discharge on November 15, 1945, he volunteered for “ after the war” cleanup for a couple of years before returning to civilian life. Over the years, he received Canadian Service Volunteer Medal and Stars. Upon returning to his home, he was a member of the HMCS Uganda/Quebec Veterans’ Association. John was a member of Major Walter Barnard, Delhi Legion Branch 125 before he passed away on November 16, 2005. UMPHERSON, W. Earl Earl was born on December 4, 1918 in Poland, Ontario. After a couple years of working at the family lumber mill in Poland, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on December 4, 1941. Earl was a pilot on Halifax bombers with 502 “Ulster Squadron” and he received the Croix de Guerre (France) for action in the Bay of Biscay on August 13, 1944. Excerpts from Coastal Command Operational Summaries cite numerous attacks during 1944-45 on German U-Boats and merchant vessels by F/O Umpherson. He was discharged in 1945. He returned to Canada after World War II with his bride, Jane Jenkins, a Navy WRNS who had served in the frontline port of Dover during the war years. Earl passed away on August 24, 2012.
