301 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND TAYLOR, Clifford R. Clifford was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 8, 1918. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in September 1941 and served in Canada, England and Egypt. He was on training command in Canada for a year and a pilot on a Royal Air Force squadron flying a Mosquito night fighter for a year. Clifford was discharged in August 1945 and received the Canadian Service Medal, the 1939-45 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Defence of England Medal. After the war, he went to the University of British Columbia and obtained two Bachelor degrees and one Masters degree. He returned to the Royal Canadian Air Force for 15 years in a Social Service position and retired in 1965. He then became Director of Child Welfare in Stratford for a further 15 years, retiring in 1980. Clifford has been a member of Seaforth Legion Branch 156 for twenty-one years. THOMAS, John J. John was born on February 16, 1918 in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1942 and soon found himself on the North Atlantic doing convoy duty. Able Seaman Thomas served as a sonar operator on HMCS Agassiz and HMCS Kamsack, both “flower” class corvettes. He left the Navy in 1945, returned to work at Kodak Canada in Toronto and in 1991, moved north to Huntsville. John transferred from Branch 213 to Huntsville Legion Branch 232. John passed away in July 2008 after thirty-five years as a Legion member. TEDFORD, David R. David was born in Peterborough, Ontario on December 20, 1974. He joined the Army on July 26, 1994 and served with the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Royal Canadian Regiment in Canada, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Master Corporal Tedford, M.M.V., C.D. served in many conflicts, engagements and peacekeeping missions. On October 8, 2008, David’s patrol was ambushed in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, while providing cover for exposed troops, his vehicle’s main cannon jammed. As his gunner attempted to fix the weapon, David rose out of the turret to return fire with the machine gun mounted atop the vehicle. Realizing the cannon could not be repaired from inside, he exited the vehicle amidst a hail of bullets, cleared the jam and began pouring heavy fire upon the enemy. Corporal Tedford’s action in suppressing the enemy throughout the firefight ensured his patrol’s successful fighting withdrawal. David was awarded the Medal of Military Valour on June 4, 2010. David is a new member of Petawawa Legion Branch 517.
