297 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SWITZER, John R. John was born on December 17, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on April 2, 1943 and was posted overseas in July 1944, serving in Canada, England, France and Germany. On the outward leg of a bombing mission to Hamburg, Germany his Halifax Bomber # LK 753 was brought down in flames over Dusseldorf, Germany on April 9, 1945. Sergeant (Flight Engineer) Switzer was the only Canadian crew member in 10 Squadron of the RAF, and it was 29 days before the end of the war. He was initially buried in the Nordhoff Cemetery in Dusseldorf but was later re-interred in the Reichwald Forest Cemetery in Kleve, Germany. John had ten operations to his credit and he was 20 years old when he died. SYMON, James S. James was born on November 18, 1897 in Greenock Township, Ontario. He joined the Army on December 31, 1915 and served in England and Europe with the 160th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. James and his wife Eva raised a daughter in Detroit where he worked as a barber. SYMANYK, Nick Nick was born on August 15, 1920 in Kenora, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Artillery on July 29, 1941 and served in Canada, England and Continental Europe during World War II. He was discharged on January 22, 1946. For his service, he received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the Defence Medal. After the war, he worked as a miner at the Algoma Ore Division. Nick was a member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 for thirty years before he passed away on September 20, 1976.
