295 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND STRODE, Frederick Henry Frederick was born on November 3, 1881 in Camden, London, England. He married Elizabeth Jane Kilford in 1898 in England and they had four children. Prior to serving in World War I. Frederick was a firefighter in Toronto He joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on August 7, 1915 and served until his discharge on July 9, 1919. After the war, he married his second wife Rose Gibbons (1877-1963) on September 7, 1929. Frederick passed away on December 12, 1953 at Sunnybrook Hospital. SWANT, Milton F. Milton was born on March 18, 1926 in Arnprior, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in October 1944 and served in Canada with the Canadian Infantry Corps and Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps until his discharge in October 1946. Some of the units where he served are: Horse Palace, Toronto, October 1944; Mohawk Park, Brantford; Camp Borden and Meaford; A37 Petawawa; Barriefield, Kingston; Ottawa, RCAPC, War Service Gratuity Section, from November 1945-October 1946. Milton has been a member of Cobden Legion Branch 550 for nineteen years. SUTHERLAND, Leslie G. Leslie was born on November 26, 1918 in Moore Township, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in London, Ontario on March 13, 1941 and served as a Warrant Officer 2 with 2-11 Engineers and a fighter pilot with 426 Squadron in Canada, in the United Kingdom and Europe. His plane, along with another, was shot down over Holland on May 24, 1943. Initially, he was buried in Haaksbergen, Holland as an unknown soldier but his body was exhumed after the war, identified and reburied in a marked grave with a proper tombstone in the same town. Leslie received the 1939-45 Star, the A/C Europe Star, the Defence Medal, the AMR and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp.
