285 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND SIMMONDS, James C. James was born on February 20, 1975 in Whitehorse, Yukon. He joined the Army on December 16, 2003 and served in Kandahar, Afghanistan with the 5th Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. As Troop Commander in 20072008, he was deployed with X Battery of the 3 R22eR Battle Group, Op ATHENA Roto 4 and was awarded the Commander-in-Chief Unit Commendation. James was wounded under honourable circumstances while facing an armed enemy, for which he was awarded the Sacrifice Medal. He held positions of Forward Observation Officer, Battery, Second in Command before his retirement on February 25, 2014. James has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for a year. SIPLE, Harry L. Harry was born on November 14, 1894 in Whitevale, Ontario. He owned and managed a general store in Selkirk, Ontario when word came of the opening of the No. 16 Service Flying Training School in Hagersville, Ontario. He applied to be a cook at the base in August 1941 and even though he was 43 years old, he was accepted and he served the duration of the camp’s tenure. During his service, his store was operated and managed by his wife and daughter. Harry was discharged in March, 1945 and he passed away on February 16, 1975. SIPLE, Gerald L. Gerald was born on January 30, 1921 in Selkirk, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and served in Canada during World War II. He was directly involved in the use and training of radar technicians until he was discharged in 1945. Gerald passed away on May 17, 1971.
