275 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ROBERTSON, William D. William was born on December 30, 1926 in Bridgeville, Gaspé, Quebec. He served in the Reserve Army in 1942 prior to joining the Canadian Army in August 1944 then served in Europe until end the end of the war. He volunteered to serve with the American Army until the Pacific conflict was over after which he was discharged on October 1, 1945. William has been a member of Hepworth Shallow Lake Legion Branch 586 for fifty-three years. ROSS, Robert S. Robert was born on June 17, 1923 in Ottawa, Ontario. He joined the Army on December 15, 1942 and became a replacement for the men lost by the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry at the Dieppe Raid in August. He trained for two years and landed with RHLI (“Rileys”) in Normandy in early July 1944. Robert was wounded in the chest by a bomb fragment on July 25, the last day of the battle for Verrières Ridge. He survived his injuries and was discharged in 1945 after having served in Canada, Britain and France. He married Dorothy Richards in 1950 and had nine children. Robert was a driver for Doran’s (later Northern) Brewery in Timmins, Ontario and also worked in some of the local mines, like the Dome and Hollinger. He moved to Kitchener, Ontario in the 1970s and worked on buildings and bridges as an ironworker. Robert was a member of Fred Gies Legion Branch 50 for ten years before he passed away on December 29, 1995. ROSS, Merrill L. Merrill was born on July 9, 1917 in Myrtle, Ontario. He joined the Army in 1942 and served in England, Italy, Holland and Germany with the RCASC. He was a member of Brooklin Legion Branch 152 for a number of years before he passed away on May 23, 1994.
