265 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND PROUD, Melville D. Melville was born on January 13, 1895 in Tara, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on January 1, 1916 and was a part of the 32nd Bruce Battalion, the 160th Bruce Battalion “B” Company and the 1st Brigade Motor Machine Gun Corps. Private Proud was killed in action in Amiens, France on August 7, 1918. He is buried in the Boves West Communal Cemetery in Somme, France. He is included on the Merchants Bank of Canada 1914-1918 Roll of Honour. PURSLEY (BOWLBY), Evelyn Marie Evelyn was born on February 19, 1925 in Hamilton, Ontario. She joined the Army on March 16, 1943 and served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps until her discharge on November 20, 1945. For her service, she was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After discharge, Evelyn married Tom Pursley and they had three children. Tom and Evelyn started Pursley Paving in 1947, a business that is still in operation. Evelyn passed away on November 26, 2001. PROUD, Robert H. Robert was born on March 20, 1896 in Tara, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in April 1916 and served in France with the 160th Bruce Battalion “B” Company and the 78th Battalion. Sergeant Proud was wounded near Gentiles Wood, Amiens by an airplane bomb, resulting in the loss of his right leg. He was one of 96 casualties from that one bomb. Robert made his own crutches while recuperating in hospital and after his discharge in 1918, became a doctor and eventually Chief of Staff at the Seaway Hospital in Wyandotte, Michigan in the United States.
