241 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND NOTTINGHAM, Les Les was born on February 27, 1919. He joined the Royal Air Force in May 1939 and was discharged in December 1945. He went to Malta in August 1941 as a member of the British Royal Air Force aboard one of 12 ships carrying British soldiers and enlisted personnel from the Merchant Navy. Eleven of those ships and over 200 Air Force personnel were lost south of France, torpedoed by the German Air Force. Only the ship carrying Corporal Nottingham made it through to Malta and four years later in 1944, he returned to England having lost all his papers and his memory. As ground personnel on Malta, Les’ unit’s job was to keep the runways secure and clean for aircraft take-off and landing. Les came to Canada in 1975. OCHITWA, Michael S. Michael was born on November 21, 1924 in Norquay, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in March 1944 and served as a Rifleman in Canada, France, England and Northwest Europe until his discharge in June 1946. Michael received the 1939-45 Victory Medal as well as the France and Germany Star. He was a member of Harry Brown V.C. Legion Branch 497 for thirty-one years before he passed away on January 29, 2011. NUNN, Frances M. L. Frances was born on December 31, 1916 and she died on May 2, 2012. She joined the Army on January 7, 1943 and was discharged on February 20, 1945, having served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. She was posted at Christie Street Hospital in Toronto; at Queen’s University in Kingston; and in Cornwall where she obtained her Sergeant Stripes. Frances joined Simcoe Legion Branch 79 Ladies Auxiliary in 1952 and The Legion in 1963. As a 60-year LA member, she held every position and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. She also held all positions with the Branch and became the first female President. Frances chaired six district conventions and received the Branch Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf. In 2008, she became the first female to take the salute at Norfolk County’s Warriors’ Day Parade.
