233 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MUTRIE, William G. R. William was born in Grand Valley, Ontario on June 15, 1912. He enlisted in 1942 and served in the North Atlantic on the Corvette New Westminster of the Royal Canadian Navy, doing convoy duty in World War II. William was discharged in 1945 and he earned the Atlantic Star Medal for his service. He passed away on March 20, 2012. NASH, Alwyn J. “John” John was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 29, 1923. He joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1941 and served with his unit installing telephone lines in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until his discharge in 1945. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the France and Germany Star and the 1939-45 Star. His father, Alwyn, served in WWI in the 170th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. John worked for General Steelwares and as a milkman for Donlands, Findlays and Silverwoods dairies and he moved to Orillia for seven years after purchasing the Orillia Motel. Back in Toronto, John worked for Bell Canada as a chauffeur and shuttle bus driver until his retirement 25 years ago. He has been a member of Highland Creek-West Hill Legion Branch 258 for sixty years and he enjoys Pub Sundays and the annual Veterans’ Dinner. John recently celebrated his 67th wedding anniversary and has three children. MYERS, John C. “Jack” Jack was born on February 12, 1922 in Webwood, Ontario. He joined the Army on May 8, 1941 and served with the 8th New Brunswick Hussars in Canada, England, North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was discharged on September 27, 1945. Jack was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star and the France and Germany Star. After the war, he worked for a mobile equipment mining company in Employee Relations. He was also a member of Wawa Legion Branch 429 for sixtythree years before he died on January 1, 2013. He had held a number of Executive positions, including Zone Commander (1970-71), District Commander (1972-75), and was awarded a Life Membership in 2001. He also received the Meritorious Service Medal, the Palm Leaf and the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation in 2011.
