He enlisted in the Army on September 15, 1942 and was discharged in April 1946. He served in Italy and Northwest Europe with the 48th Highlanders of Canada in the 1st Canadian Division. Allan’s two ear drums were damaged by artillery fire but he refused to be sent home with a medical discharge. So he was posted to the #1 Canadian General Hospital as an orderly and ambulance driver. This exposed him to as much danger as being in the Infantry; it also meant he was later getting home than his buddies. Allan was a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for sixty years before he passed away on October 15, 2006.
