He left high school on January 11, 1915 to enlist and train with the 59th Regiment, “C” Company CEF in Bermuda before embarking for France on May 29, 1916, arriving in Le Havre on August 14, 1916. Private McLellan was in the 38th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) when he was killed in action on November 18, 1916 at age 19 at the Battle of the Somme. He is memorialized on the Vimy Memorial in Pas de Calais, France. His official death notice reads, “Your son was busily engaged with the signals when he was killed. His work with the Battalion has always been of the highest caliber and in the last stage, was outstanding. His example was always a cheerful one, even in the most adverse conditions, and his loss will be severely regretted by all concerned.” In a letter home, his brother Alex, also in France, commented that “Archie is now in a far better place than we are.” MCLOUGHLIN (ANTONUCCI), Barbara M. Barbara was born on July 1, 1920 in Teignmouth, England. She was a part of the Auxiliary Territorial Service of the Army serving in England during WWII, from September 1942 until August 1945. She has been a member of Last Post Legion Branch 410 for seven years. MCLELLAN, James Edmund “Jim” Jim was born on December 1, 1899 in Huberdeau, Quebec. As a tough, rugged 16-year old boy anxious to get in the fray, he left high school in January 1916 to enlist. He arrived in France on June 22, 1917 and saw considerable action with his older brother Alex. In a letter home, Alex refers to Jim being with him at Passchendaele Ridge and at the Battle of the Marne, following which Alex intervened with the Colonel, advising that Jim was underage and had him transferred to Transport moving ammunition to the Front. This failed to save Jim and Alex spoke of this during his life. Lance Corporal McClellan was 18 when he was killed during an attack on Marcelcave on August 8, 1918 while serving with the 21st Battalion, “D” Company (Eastern Ontario Regiment). He is buried in the Crucifix Corner Cemetery in Villers-Bretonneux, France in Plot 1, Row A, Grave 20.
