He may have been the Walter Clarkson Bailey of Sydney who was born on 4 July 1922, or he may have been the Arnold Walter Bailey, the son of Reginald and Annie Bailey of Purcells Cove, who died on 10 September 1967 in Halifax. James Barry from Jollimore, Halifax, NS enlisted in the 2/Mancs on 31 July 1939. This may be James Edwin Barry who was born in Westville, Pictou County on January 25, 1918, or it may be James Barry who was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton County on August 16, 1918. Sydney ‘Syd’ Leonard Barwick was born 1910 in Bodmin, Cornwall, England, and came to Canada with his family in 1914 when his father, Captain F J Barwick, MC, MM, transferred from the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry to the Royal Canadian Regiment. Syd was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and, in April 1939, Syd sailed from Halifax and enlisted in the 2/Mancs. While at the Recruit Depot, at Ladysmith Barracks in Ashton, Syd was middleweight boxing champ and finished second in the ‘best shot competition’. He fought in France and was evacuated from Dunkirk. He was transferred to the Royal Armoured Corps and served in the 44th Royal Tank Regiment RAC (44 RTR) in North Africa. Syd was wounded and captured on 12 June 1942 during the “defense of 150th Brigade Box” which was part The Battle of Gazala. He died of an illness, while prisoner of war, at P.G. 202 (Hospital Camp) Lucca, Italy, on 14 April 1943. Lance Corporal Sydney Leonard Barwick, age 33, is buried the Florence War Cemetery, Italy, in grave 1E2. His name was included on the regimental memorial plaque in the Drill Hall on Old Market Street in Bristol. G Bird enlisted in the 2/Mancs in 1939. E Cameron of Halifax. J C Carter of Alberta. Arnold William ‘Slim’ Carver was born to Steven and Letitia Carver of Italy Cross on 13 March 1919. He had joined the West Nova Scotia Regiment (WNSR), as a reserve soldier, in 1936. Slim was set on joining the permanent (regular) force and opted to go to England to join the British Army. In March 1939 he enlisted in 2/Mancs. In January 1940, Slim and seven other Canadians in the 2/Mancs volunteered to transfer to 5th (Ski) Battalion Scots Guards for a chance to go to war in Finland. The expedition was cancelled a month later and Slim was returned to 2/Mancs in France. He was part of the battalion’s rear-guard action in France and was evacuated from Dunkirk in June 1940. In 1941 he transferred to the West Nova Scotia Regiment and saw action in Sicily and Italy. At the time of his discharge in 1945 he was an acting company sergeant major. After the war he became a locomotive engineer and a member of Branch 24 Bridgewater of The Royal Canadian Legion. Arnold William Carver died on 26 December 1988 and is buried in the Brookside Cemetery Bridgewater. William Colbourne of Halifax. F L Cooper of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Melville ‘Mel’ William Coppell was born on 28 November 1918 in Melville Cove. He enlisted in the 2/Mancs on 21 September 1938. Mel served in B Company and was wounded during 2/Mancs’ fighting retreat to the Dunkirk beaches. He was evacuated from Dunkirk on 31 May 1940. In October 1941 he transferred to the Canadian Army
