He Joined the Canadian Armed Forces on June 10, 1991. He served with the Canadian Army in the Lord Strathcona's Horse Armoured Corp. Cordell retired on February 19, 2018. During his military career he was posted to New Brunswick, Quebec, and Alberta he was also deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Ukraine. He was also deployed during the Winnipeg flood, G8 Summit Security Force and the Canmore floods. Cordell was also a member of the Order of Military Merit.
