Volume 21 www.legionnl.com 9 John Robert Hannam, Hanham, as it later got changed in London, was born to Benjamin and Harriett, née Saunders, of Black Duck Cove on October 24th, 1888. On August 13th, 1915 he joined the Newfoundland Regiment. John embarked for Southampton with the 1st Battalion to fight the Germans in WWI. He fought on the Western front in France and Belgium. November 20th, 1916 he was admitted to Wandsworth suffering gunshot wounds to his left leg and left shoulder. After his recovery he continued into battle. March 20th, 1918, John was taken to the 64th Casualty Clearing Station listed as “dangerously ill” with severe gunshot wounds to the chest, with one bullet just centimeters from his heart. He spent several months in the hospital in London, England where they removed the bullets from his leg and shoulder but thought the one near his heart was too dangerously close to attempt removal. April 4th, 1919 John returned home to Creston. Later, the bullet was successfully removed at the Burin Cottage Hospital.
