He graduated from high school in 1969 at Grand Falls Academy. In 1970, he completed a clerk accounting course at the local district vocational school. He went on to Memorial University in St. John’s, NL and was conferred a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1975. In 1981, he received his Certified General Accountants Designation (I.E.C.G.A., now C.P.A.). He was employed three years with H.R. Doane, Chartered Accountants; eight years with the former Federal Business Development Bank; and twenty-four years with the Nova Consolidated School District. For the majority of his career he held senior management positions in finance and accounting. He retired in 2014 at the age of sixty-one. His father, Silas Hillier, was a World War II Veteran and was employed by the local paper mill for approximately forty years. In 1946, Silas married Jennie Clarke of Springdale and together they raised a family of thirteen; eight boys and five girls. No easy task on only one modest income. Suffice to say, Cass never grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. In 1978, Cass married the love of his life, Lillian Mae Ash, of Carbonear and they had two wonderful children; Brian in 1981(granddaughter, Abigail in 2016) and Nancy in 1983. During the past two decades he has written a multitude of poems, tributes and songs, etc. This is his first book and it is primarily an autobiography describing the life and times he experienced with his family, colleagues, friends and others. It makes for an interesting read, as Cass is known to possess sharp wit and a keen sense of humour.
