www.legionnl.ca 177 Lest We Forget - Volume 16 Young Men We Were Young men we were just living out our dream making a living on an island so serene Then in 1914, came a call from over sea’s “all the young men we need urgently” Would we go? There was no doubt Our women sowed us uniforms which fitted us out The first five hundred strong marched proudly to the sea boarded the S.S. Florizel adorned with our blue puttee's We sailed the North Atlantic so deep, blue and so wide we landed in Europe full of honor, full of pride The battle field of France became our second home in the deep and bloody trenches we died never fighting alone We fought at Beaumont Hamel It was there through war's misery The fighting Newfoundlander earned an honored place in history In four long years it was over nothing more needed to be done Those of us who survived return home to out loved one's Young men we were One hundred years has passed us bye July first is our memorial day which marks our battle cry There is a little purple flower to remember our brave young lot We who gave it their all less you forget, forget-me-not. In France we're honored with Cross's Atop our clay formed tombs Our story will live forever In Newfoundland and Labrador, at The Rooms Young Men We Were. Author James E.
