He joined the Royal navy on 23rd Apri l 1940. After training he was posted to HMS Fleur de Lys. On October 14th, 1941 the HMS Fleur de Lys was torpedoed and sunk. There were three survivors out of a crew of seventy-three. A/S Phillip Roy Whalen Service #: JX/81435 Phi l ip Roy Whalen served with the Royal Navy from January 9th, 1940 to July 23rd, 1946. He is a member of Deer Lake Branch # 3 of The Royal Canadian Legion. Kathleen M. Whalen (Ellsworth) Service #: W305130 Kathleen Whalen served with the RCAF Womenʼs Division. She is a member of Stephenvi l le Branch # 35 of The Royal Canadian Legion.
