He served with the 1st Bn. Royal Newfoundland Regiment from 15th June, 1915 to 14th April, 1917 when he was killed in action. He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery in France. William Toope (Billy) Service #: 2053X William Toope was born in Ireland’s Eye on 2nd February, 1893. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 4th April, 1916. He trained on the HMS Vivid and Heroic. On 26th Nov., 1917, he transferred to the Stadacona and Nicobe, and on 21st Dec., 1918, he returned to the HMS Briton in preparation for demobilization on 24th Mar., 1919. Frederick Toope Service #: 2702X Frederick Toope was born in Ireland’s Eye on 7th Feb., 1897. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve in Dec., 1916. He trained and served with the HMS Briton from 1916 to 1917. His ship was in Halifax when the Halifax Explosion took place on 6th Dec., 1917. Fred was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy (No. 1633) from there. He saw action on the HMS Stadacona, Seagull, Nicobe until 1918 when he was transferred back to his RNR training ship HMS Briton on 21st Dec., 1918 and demobilized with VG character reference on 24th March, 1919.
