Family Violence Awareness ● Sensibilisation à la violence familiale 3 Your impact Each year, the CPANB participates in an educational booklet campaign with the aim of helping New Brunswickers understand public safety issues and find help. Proceeds from this campaign have allowed CPANB to donate $10,000 to the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre (MMFC) for further research on family/intimate partner violence. We chose MMFC because of their collaborative and action-oriented approach towards researching family violence, violence against women and children, and intimate partner violence (IPV). This year, MMFC is celebrating 30 years of conducting research in collaboration with personnel from various academic disciplines, government departments, and community organizations – bringing together diverse perspectives on the complexity of family violence. Who was Muriel McQueen? The Honourable Muriel McQueen Fergusson, P.C., O.C., Q.C. spent her life setting the standard for New Brunswick women and women everywhere. Born in 1899 in Shediac, New Brunswick, she became a lawyer long before women were accepted in the profession. When her husband became too ill to continue his law practice, Muriel took up the counselling of his clients. Her advice was so sound that some of the clients believed Muriel was simply passing on the information provided by her husband. A tireless activist for the rights of women and the poor, Muriel made history when she became the first woman Senator from theAtlantic region and the first female Speaker of the Senate. What is the MMFC? The MMFC fosters and conducts collaborative, action-oriented research projects on family violence inAtlantic Canada. Research project findings are used to inform changes to service delivery and policy and are the basis of education and training programs. Conducting and supporting research projects in collaboration with personnel from various academic disciplines, government departments, and community organizations, the MMFC brings together diverse perspectives on the complexity of family violence.
