The New Brunswick ImmigrantWomen’s Association launched the Association’s support, referral and advisory services with a networking and information sharing event for immigrant women at the Fredericton Public Library. The founding members introduced the Association and led round table discussions on major areas of interest for immigrant women. Students from Renaissance College who had produced NBIWA’s brochure and a welcome binder in collaboration with the Association were also on hand to explain the contents to the participants. The New Brunswick ImmigrantWomen’s Association was formed out of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre’s research team on Violence Against Immigrant and Visible Minority Women in New Brunswick with the New Brunswick Multicultural Council. The founding members formed the executive team to run theAssociation which includes Layla Rahmeh, Natasha Akhtar, Jael Duarte, Nigam Khanal, Lisa Taylor, Diluckshnie Jayawardena, and Renu Dhaygude. Barriers were removed to allow women to participate freely, snacks were provided and babysitters were hired for the event. Francophone immigrant and Acadian women provided translation.The event reached almost 60 newcomer and immigrant women who were eager to learn of an association which specialized in tackling the issues of adapting to a new country, and helping to overcome cultural obstacles. L’Association des femmes immigrantes du Nouveau-Brunswick a lancé ses services de soutien, de référence et de conseil en organisant une activité de réseautage et de partage d’informations pour les immigrantes à la bibliothèque publique de Fredericton. Les membres fondateurs ont présenté l'Association et ont animé des tables rondes sur les principaux domaines d'intérêt pour les immigrantes. Les étudiants du Renaissance College qui avaient produit la brochure de l’AFINB et un cartable de bienvenue en collaboration avec l’Association étaient également présents pour expliquer le contenu aux participants. L’Association des femmes immigrantes du Nouveau-Brunswick a été créée à partir de l’équipe de recherche du Centre Muriel McQueen Fergusson sur la violence faite aux immigrantes et aux femmes appartenant à une minorité visible au Nouveau-Brunswick avec le Conseil multiculturel du N.-B.
