He served in England and in Canada. William served in both World War I, enlisting in England, and World War II, enlisting in Canada. He served with the Carleton York Regiment. He died in 1994. Soumis par la Légion royale canadienne, filiale 59 de Millville. GILLIS, Donald M. WWII/Deuxième Guerre mondiale Major Donald M. Gillis, MC, Canadian Army. Don was a 1937 graduate from Acadia University. He began his study of Law at UNB Fredericton but left his studies to join the military. Don joined the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1939 and served with the 14th Field Regiment as a Troop Commander during the Normandy invasion. For his valour during the battle of the Scheldt Estuary, Belgium in October 1944, Don was awarded the Military Cross. He then served with the 34th Field Regiment from November 1944 until the end of the war in May 1945. His Military Cross was presented to him by King George VI at Buckingham Palace. Don’s wife Juanita served in the United States Air Force and they married in the US at the end of the war. After the war Don returned to UNB to finish his Bachelor of Civil Law. He was called to the New Brunswick Bar in 1946 and then joined the firm Gilbert & McGloan. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1958 and he was President of the New Brunswick Barristers Society. He practised law until his 90th birthday. Don died in 2006. Major Donald M. Gillis, MC, Armée canadienne. Don était un diplômé de 1937 de l’Université Acadia. Pour sa bravoure lors de la bataille de l’estuaire de l’Escaut, en Belgique, en octobre 1944, Don a reçu la Croix militaire. Il a ensuite servi dans le 34e Field Regiment de novembre 1944 jusqu’à la fin de la guerre en mai 1945. Sa Croix militaire lui a été remise par le roi George VI au palais de Buckingham. L’épouse de Don, Juanita, a servi dans la United States Air Force et ils se sont mariés aux États-Unis à la fin de la guerre. Après la guerre, Don est retourné à UNB pour terminer son baccalauréat en droit civil. Il a été admis au Barreau du NouveauBrunswick en 1946, puis s’est joint au cabinet Gilbert & McGloan. Il a été nommé conseiller de la reine en 1958 et il a été président de la New Brunswick Barristers Society. Il a pratiqué le droit jusqu’à son 90e anniversaire. Don est décédé en 2006.
