93 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca DRAYSON, Lloyd H. WWII Lloyd was born in Mentmore to Percy and Myrtle (Whelpton) Drayson. He married Louisa Pinette about 1947 and worked as a grain manager for Manitoba Pool at Franklin and then for the Canadian Grain Commission in Winnipeg. Lloyd belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. He passed away on March 15, 2017, in Winnipeg and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 11, Block 9, Range 26. DURSTON, George H. WWII George was born in 1922, the son of Rowan and M.E. Durston of Dauphin. He attended public school in the Durston School District in the town of Dauphin and completed high school there. He was active in sports such as hockey, fast ball and track and field. At one time, he held the provincial high school mile track record. He belonged to the Dauphin Collegiate Drama Club and played violin in the orchestra. Prior to enlisting, he had been a teller at the Bank of Commerce in Gilbert Plains. George died on Match 19, 1944, at the age of 22 and is commemorated at Durnbach War Cemetery in Bavaria, Germany. They were on a bombing run over Frankfurt when their Halifax Aircraft LW 553 went missing. Following World War II, his remains and those of the flying crew of #578 Squadron were located to a Canadian Cemetery south of Munich. Durston Lake (64 H/12), north of Wood Lake was named after him in 1995. EVANS, Alfred Edwin “Alf” WWII Alf was born on April 6, 1915, to Tom and Ursula (Boles) Evans in the R.M. of North Cypress, Manitoba. He enlisted and served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals during World War II. He married Jo Sowiak of St. Martins and they lived in Kelowna, British Columbia in 1986. Alf passed away on March 14, 1994, most likely in Kelowna.
