91 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca CRUICKSHANK, Andrew Ralph WWII Ralph was born on February 19, 1919, to Alex and Millie (Porteous) Cruickshank in Inkerman District. He began farming when he left school. Ralph attended MIT in Winnipeg in the fall of 1941 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force training as an airplane mechanic. He saw active service on December 19, 1941. He transferred to Brandon Manning Depot St. Thomas, Ontario and Mt. Jolie, Quebec. He remained there until June 1945 and was sent overseas to England and Ireland. He was discharged and sent home to Canada in March 1946. He met his wife, Cordelia (Dil) Graham, at a wartime dance in Neepawa and they were married on October 12, 1946 in Eden, Manitoba. They spent their lives farming in the Union District, east of Neepawa. Ralph passed away on November 5, 2003 at the Killarney Health Centre and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 10, Block 9, Range 23. DALTON, James Howard WWI James was born on May 7, 1891, to Albert and Alice Dalton in Neepawa. He received his education there and then was employed in the hardware business. On September 17, 1915, he enlisted at Camp Sewell (Hughes) and joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 46th Battalion overseas. He also participated in the 46th Battalion Band, playing baritone. He served in Europe from 1915 to 1919, playing in the band and serving as a stretcher bearer. James kept diaries that show he was at many of the main World War I battlegrounds, Ypres, Vimy, etc. He returned to Canada after the war and went back to the hardware business and in 1920 he went to Birtle to manage a hardware store. James married his wife, Laura Kilpatrick of Neepawa, and they resided in Birtle. James passed away on October 2, 1967, and was buried in the Birtle Cemetery. DEVESON, Robert Kenneth “Bob” WWII Bob was born on April 16, 1918, to George and Verna (Drysdale) Deveson in the Inkerman District. He attended school both there and in Neepawa. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was sent to England in 1942, where he made many flights over Europe. After his discharge in 1946, he went to Vancouver and worked for the Post Office, becoming an assistant Post Master. He retired in 1979. Bob married Phyllis Hoddinot of the Glenholm District, and they made their home in Vancouver. He passed away on September 30, 2001, in Chilliwack, British Columbia.
