79 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca CAMERON, Charles Edwin WWII Charles was born on September 14, 1917, in the RM of Langford. He was also raised in this area. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1940 and trained in Brandon, Manitoba. Charles became ill in 1941 and was put in the reserve forces. He later served with the Frontiersman for four years, and the Manitoba 12th Dragoons for six years. Charles married Margaret Ann Smith Salsbury in 1942 and they had three children. Charles worked as a security guard for the Neepawa RCMP detachment, which was his job for 28 years. Charles passed away on January 4, 2004 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Lot 5, Unit A, Range West. CAMPBELL, Allan Roy WWII Allan was born on January 8, 1923, to Hugh and Matilda Campbell, north-west of Neepawa. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1940. He had first tried to join the Cameron Highlanders but they sent him home and told him to grow up. He was accepted by the Royal Canadian Air Force and sent to Brandon, Winnipeg, and then to St. Thomas for training as an aero engine mechanic. His first posting was #8 Winnipeg. He also spent time in Macdonald, MB; Dorval, Quebec, and Debert, Nova Scotia. His next move was to Sea Island, BC where he was attached to the Air Crew Assessment Board and spent the rest of the war overseeing coastal air bases from Vancouver to Juno, Alaska. Allan remained there until he was discharged in October 1945. He returned to his home farm near Neepawa when his father had a stroke and could no longer continue. He joined the Brandon #23 Royal Canadian Legion in 1946 and was later made a life member. Allen held many offices including President of the Branch. In 1964, he became interested in the Air Cadets and was involved in their organization until 1990. He spent many years as liaison officer between the Cadets and the regular Air Force. In 1948, he married Ruby Mervyn and they farmed in Neepawa for the next fifty years. Allan passed away on November 13, 2000 in Neepawa and is buried at the Riverside Cemetery, Lot 16, Block 8, Range 27.
