71 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca BUCHANAN, Clifford “Cliff” WWI Cliff was born in Coon Rapids, Iowa on December 9, 1895. He came to Gladstone in 1902, farming in the Ogilvie District. He enlisted with the Fort Garry Horse. His ship, a Cancord Liner, was torpedoed and sunk. War years were spent in England, France, and Belgium. In 1924, he married Bertha McGhie. They had two daughters, Jean and Hazel. He was an active member of Masons, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 110, curling and playing bridge. Cliff passed away on April 25, 1983. BUCHANAN, Mervin Cameron “Bud” WWII Bud was born on September 4, 1922, to Nels and Mary Alice Buchanan in Pleasantdale, Saskatchewan. At a young age, he and his family moved to Riding Mountain, Manitoba, where he grew up. Bud joined the army in 1939 and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He lied about his age, as many had done, so he could join. He was sent overseas in 1940 and took part in the Dieppe raid. After Dieppe, Bud left the regiment and spent two years in the Royal Army Service Corps. He served in North Africa, then in Italy where he spent almost two years. From there, he went to France and into Holland. He was discharged and returned to Canada on June 16, 1945. Bud and his wife, Evelyn Ruth Edwards, were married on March 9, 1942, in Brighton, England. They lived in St. James (Winnipeg), Manitoba. Bud passed away on October 24, 1997, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is buried in Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Winnipeg. BURNETT, Donald Fredwell “Don” WWII Don was born on August 20, 1923, to Ranald (Scotty) and Christina Burnett of Neepawa, Manitoba. He was raised and received his education there. Don enlisted in 1944 and served in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was stationed in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. He and his wife, Muriel Biles, were married in 1947, after he returned from the war. They moved north to Snow Lake, Flin Flon and eventually Thompson, Manitoba. Don worked with Northwest Electric at mine sites and on many hydro projects in northern Manitoba. He passed away on February 1, 2004, in Westlaco, Texas where he and his wife had spent many winters. Don is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 63, Block C, Cremation Gardens.
