69 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca BUCHANAN, Andrew Mark WWII Andrew was born on October 27, 1923, to Bert and Maude Buchanan in Birnie, Manitoba. He was educated in the area at Oak Leaf School. He joined the Army in May 1940, at the age of sixteen and trained at Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg. In 1941, he took an instructor’s course and was posted to Fort William, Ontario. After a few months there, he was returned to Winnipeg and given a medical discharge. A year later, he rejoined the army and was posted to Camp Shilo, Manitoba. He next took a “chemical warfare course” at Long Branch, Ontario. After two months in Debert, NS, he was sent to Aldershot, England. There, he was posted to the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Later, he was transferred to the Regina Rifles where he joined them in France in July 1944. He was wounded there and spent six months in 13th Canadian General Hospital. When he was released, he was sent back to Canada and posted to Brandon, Manitoba with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp. He received his discharge in 1945. Andrew and his wife, Grace, were married on November 28 ,1946, in Arden, Manitoba. They moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1974. Andrew passed away on February 25, 2014, in Red Deer. He is probably buried in Red Deer’s Alto Reste Cemetery where his daughter is buried. BUCHANAN, Arthur Garfield “Art” WWII Art was born on December 12, 1912, to Nels and Mary Alice Buchanan in Riding Mountain, Manitoba. He joined the army and served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Victoria, BC as well as Windsor and Woodstock, Ontario. He and his wife, Agnes MacLean, were married on October 12, 1934, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Art passed away on October 4, 2010, in Prince George, BC and the record shows it was a non-cemetery burial.
