197 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca TRICKETT, Roy D. WWII Roy was born to William and Agnes (Alexander) Trickett in Eden, Manitoba. He worked at Fairbanks-Morse in Winnipeg for about two years before joining the war effort. Roy was one of the first Kelwood boys to join the Navy. He enlisted in July 1942. He was already married in 1944; his wife accompanied him back to Winnipeg from Kelwood. He was living in Saint Boniface in Winnipeg from 1957 to 1968, working as a Sales Manager and married to Jeanne E. (maiden name unknown). Roy passed away suddenly on August 12, 1976, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. TRICKETT, William Dearl “Will” WWII Will was born on August 17, 1923, to Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Trickett in Eden, Manitoba. He received his education in Kelwood and after working for a few years at Clear Lake and MacDonald Air Force Base near Portage la Prairie, Will enlisted in the RCNVR in July 1942. He was sent to train at Esquimalt and then went overseas in March 1943. He served on the HMCS Athabaskan. In April 1944, the ship was torpedoed off the coast of France. There were 128 casualties and 82 others, including Will, were captured and locked up as German Prisoners of War. He was liberated in 1945. He was presented with the Murmansk Medal by USSR Ambassador to Canada, Aleksei Rodionov on October 1, 1988. Will married Jean Gilmore and they lived in Victoria, British Columbia. He passed away on December 14, 2004, at the age of 79 in Victoria. VENN, Frank James WWII Frank was born around 1917, to Frank and Edith Venn in Edrans, Manitoba. After completing grade 11 at Edrans School, he moved to Winnipeg and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He trained in Canada and was posted overseas to continue upgrading his flight experience. It was on a training flight that his Oxford aircraft crashed at Loxley, Warwickshire, killing all three members of the crew. Frank passed away on June 26, 1941, at the age of 24. He is commemorated in Stratford-upon-Avon Cemetery in Warwickshire, England. Venn Lake (64 P/6) east of Nejanilini Lake was named after him in 1974.
