193 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca SUMNER, Lori E. Lori Sumner was born in Neepawa, Manitoba on August 4, 1966. She attended school in Neepawa, the following her graduation in 1984, she completed a degree in geography from the University of Winnipeg. In 1995, she enrolled at HMCS Prevost, a naval reserve unit in London. By 1998, she was employed full time at HMCS Prevost as a Logistics Lieutenant (Navy). In 2005, she transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) as a Captain. Upon attaining her second language profile, she was posted to 437 Squadron at 8 Wing /CFB Trenton as their Logistics/Administration Officer. After a year at Canadian Forces Base Borden, she was promoted to Major and posted to Wing Administration. In 2010, 8 Wing’s Mission Support Team was deployed to Camp Mirage, in support of the war in Afghanistan. As the Deputy Commanding Officer, she led the administration and finance sections. Camp Mirage was ordered closed prior to the rotation’s planned departure. Lori was one of the few who were asked to go do Kandahar and relieve personnel for their mid-tour leave. A memorable moment was ducking for cover at the Tim Hortons trailer. Subsequent postings to Ottawa included the Vice Chief of Defence Staff (VCDS), Assistant Deputy Minister (Information Management), and Canadian Forces Intelligence Command. During this time, she completed a Masters Degree in Military History at the Royal Canadian College and presented a paper at a symposium at the Australian Army War College. Her final three years in the military were at Chief Military Personnel, where she led occupational analysis teams. She retired in January 2024 and is currently a grievance analyst in DND’s Compensation and Benefits section. THOMPSON, Charles Edgar “Charlie” WWII Charlie was born on November 27, 1916, to Wilbur and Francis (Curtis) Thompson in Binscarth, Manitoba. His family moved southwest of Neepawa after spending a few years in the Grandview area. He enlisted on January 12, 1942 in Winnipeg and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Three and a half years later, on September 9, 1945, he was discharged in Regina, Saskatchewan. Charlie married Doreen LeBlanc and they lived in Neepawa, Manitoba. He worked as a carpenter and as a builder. Charlie passed away on November 19, 1984 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa.
