191 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca STEWART, Lila Violet WWII Lila was born in 1917 and lived in the Clanwilliam, Manitoba area. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served until the end of the war. She married Roland Stewart in August 1943 while both were serving their country. After their discharge, they returned to farm in Brookdale, Manitoba. In 1967, they moved from the farm and took over the post office in Brookdale in 1981. In 1984, she moved to Neepawa. She was very active in sports, especially curling. Lila passed away on January 16, 1991 and was buried in the Brookdale Cemetery in Brookdale. STEWART, Roland Grant WWII Roland was born in May 1919, to Russell and Violet (Grant) Stewart in Brookdale, Manitoba. He received his education in Franklin and Clanwilliam. Roland joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was stationed in British Columbia, Alaska and Alberta. He married his wife, Lila Moad, in August 1943 and after they received their discharges at the end of the war, they went to Brookdale to farm. Roland passed away on January 28, 1978 and was buried at the Brookdale Cemetery. SUDDABY, Gordon Henry WWI Gordon was born on September 27, 1895, to John Robert and Sarah Suddaby in Harrison, Ontario. They lived in Eden when they moved to Manitoba. He enlisted in the 44th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on April 30, 1915, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Gordon was sent overseas to France and Belgium with the 8th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry. He was a sniper and wounded in the hip and was in hospital and on sick leave for about six months. He returned to the trenches and had gradually been worked forward to his old duty of sniping. He was “missing in action” and later presumed to be dead on November 10, 1917. Gordon was buried at Ypres Arrondissement, West Flanders in Belgium and memorialized at the Menin Gate Memorial.
