185 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca SMITHSON, Robert H. WWII Robert, born in 1919, was the eldest son of Robert and Margaret. He was educated in Eden. He joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1939 and after serving in Jamaica, he was sent to Hong Kong where he was held prisoner for 45 months. Ill health plagued him on his return, but he worked for the CNR as a carman until his death. In 1946, he married Elizabeth Winters and they had five children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brooklands Weston Branch 2. Robert passed away on December 28, 1974, in Winnipeg and was buried there at Elmwood Cemetery. SMITHSON, William Ernest “Ern” WWI William was born on February 4, 1889, to Edward and Margaret Smithson in Gerracotta, Ontario. He served in the Army with the 79th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I. Ern returned to Eden but later took up a homestead in Saskatchewan. He rented his farm and returned to Eden to live. Ern was very interested in sports and took an active part in hunting, fishing and curling. He was always interested in the Eden basketball team. Ern passed away on March 13, 1958, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa. SNEESBY, Albert Bruce WWII Born on June 1, 1918 in Neepawa, Manitoba, Bruce received his education in Rosedale, Glenholm, and Winchester schools. He worked a few years on a ranch in Alberta and then in the spring of 1941, he enlisted in the 18th Manitoba Armed Car Regiment. Bruce went overseas in September 1942. He saw active duty in France, Belgium, and Holland. Bruce was awarded the following medals: France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, as well as the War Medal 1939-1945. Bruce was fighting near the Maas River in Holland when he lost his life on February 8, 1945. He is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery.
