177 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca SHANKS, Ivan WWII Ivan was born on December 18, 1905. He joined the Manitoba 12th Dragoons on June 9, 1941. He served in France, Holland, Germany, Belgium and England. He was called Heavy Reconnaissance Unit and was equipped with stag hounds, cars and jeeps. His medals include the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Victory Medal and Defence Medal and Clasp, Victory Medal, and Defence of Britain Medal. Ivan passed away on March 5, 2003, in Neepawa and was buried there in Riverside Cemetery. SHEARER, Ambrose Bernice WWI Ambrose was born on May 8, 1893, to William T. and Emmeline (Bechtel) Shearer in Victoria, Ontario and was raised in Neepawa, Manitoba. He served overseas with the Royal Naval Air Service from 1915 to 1919. Bun married Florence Young in January 1920. He was awarded the Italian Star for bravery, Italian War Cross, Croix de Guerre with Palm and Order of St. Anne from Russia. He spent from 1925 to 1932 in England as an Air Liaison Officer. He was appointed Director of World and Buildings in Ottawa in 1938 and designed the buildings of the Commonwealth Air Force Plan in Canada in World War II. Bun retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force as Air Vice Marshall and retired to Vancouver, British Columbia. He passed away in Nicola, BC on September 5, 1952, due to a car accident caused by his coronary disease. He was buried in Vancouver. SHEARER, William Charles WWI William was born on December 21, 1888, to William T. and Emmeline (Bechtel) Shearer in Neepawa, Manitoba. He married Cora Richardson and lived in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He enlisted on May 10, 1916, in North Battleford with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was quickly promoted to Corporal and then to Captain. After he was discharged, he returned to teaching as a high school teacher in Saskatchewan. At one point, he was the principal of Kamsack School. William passed away on October 11, 1957, in Nipawin and was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Melfort District of Saskatchewan.
