171 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca ROGERS, Wilfred WWI Wilfred was born on October 17, 1897, to George and Lillian (Hyde) Rogers of the RM of Langford, Manitoba. He received his education at Glendale School and farmed in the area. In May 1918, Wilfred was drafted and enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He served in the 1st Depot Battalion, Manitoba Regiment in Canada. He was discharged on January 13, 1919. Wilfred resided on the farm until his retirement in the late 1960s when he retired to Neepawa. He had served as councilor in Langford from 1960 until 1973, as well as serving on the hospital board and in The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23. Wilfred passed away on December 10, 1985, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery. ROSS, Arnold Richmond WWI Arnold was born to George and Agnes Ross in Eden, Manitoba. He was working as a farmer before his enlistment. He enlisted on February 19, 1916, with the 226th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Neepawa and served with the Canadian Infantry. He was given a “harvest furlough” on August 16 and was at home in Eden when he became ill in mid-September. His doctor diagnosed him with typhoid fever, in spite of his having received his three inoculations on the army base. Arnold passed away on October 4, 1916, and was buried at Rosedale Cemetery, about five miles north of Neepawa. There are two gravestones there. SANGSTER, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born on August 19, 1923, to William and Mary (Shorten) Sangster in Neepawa. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps on March 20, 1943, and later transferred over to the Royal Canadian Black Watch. Bill served overseas in England and Europe. He was discharged on May 7, 1946. He married Lillian Briese on January 12, 1949, and they lived just west of Neepawa. In 1950, Bill began working for the International Harvester Company, where he remained right up until his retirement in 1987. Bill passed away on December 24, 1999, in Neepawa and is buried there at Riverside Cemetery.
