153 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca MUSTARD, Wendell WWI Wendell was born in Gladstone, Manitoba in 1896. He went overseas in 1916 and served with 12 Field Ambulance in France and in Belgium during World War I.Wendell was a catcher on the 12 Field Ball Team. He returned in 1919. From 1945 to 1966, he was Reeve of the RM of Westbourne and from 1960 to 1962 was President of Union of RM’s. He was also board member of Bracken Liquor Commission, Secretary of Manitoba Pool Elevators and Chairman of Hospital Building Committee. Wendell passed away in 1986. NEWTON, Alfred F. WWII Alfred was born on October 20, 1920, to Arthur and Ella (Ford) Newton in Neepawa, Manitoba. He was raised in the Union District and started school there. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 and trained as a gunner on Liberator bombers and graduated from the Bombing and Gunnery School at RCAF Station MacDonald near Portage la Prairie. He served with the 357 Squadron overseas in Burma and in India. The special duty squadron flew Liberators and Dakotas to drop men and supplies behind enemy lines. His service mid-year mostly focused his flights in eastern Burma, an area that had, at one point, been completely taken over by Japanese Axis Forces. After the war was over, Alfred returned to farming in the Kelwood area. He married Daisy McIntyre in 1952 and they remained there until 1999, when they moved to Neepawa to retire. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kelwood Branch. Alfred passed away on January 10, 2023. NIKART, Mark WWII Mark was born on October 21, in the Minto District of Manitoba and lived in the Eden area. Mark enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in 1939 and served overseas in Germany and Holland. He received is discharge in 1946 and upon his return to Canada, he worked for the INCO Nickel Mine in Sudbury, Ontario. He married Winnie Sergeant and passed away on January 2, 1992.
