147 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca MITCHELL, Henry George WWI Henry was born on April 7, 1898, to James and Ellen (Henderson) in Portage la Prairie. He worked as a butcher at the time of his enlistment on August 13, 1915, in Portage. He served in Canada and overseas in France and the United Kingdom with the 27th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry. He received his discharge on March 29, 1919, and married his wife, Hannah Lord, in November 1920. George passed away on February 26, 1971, in Transcona (Winnipeg) and was buried there in the Transcona Cemetery. MONNINGTON, Sedley James WWI Sedley, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Monnington, was born in Gladstone, but came to Neepawa with his parents when he was five years old. His school days were spent there. Sedley enlisted in the 78th Battalion in 1915. Private Sedley Monnington was 22 years old when he received his death wound on the battlefield in France on November 2, 1916, and passed away five days later. MORLEY, Mabel Mae WWII Mabel was born on February 18, 1922, to Henry and Pearl (Mills) Morley in Glencairn, Manitoba. Her family moved to Riding Mountain when she was twelve years old. Mabel joined the Army in May 1943 and spent some time in Winnipeg before being sent to Kitchener, Ontario for her basic training. Upon completion of that training, she returned to Winnipeg and then moved on to Shilo where she remained until her discharge in June 1945. Mabel married Bill McConnell on February 18, 1953, and they moved to his farm in Birnie, where they spent their lives. Mabel passed away in August 1997 and was buried in the Birnie Cemetery.
