145 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca MIDDLETON, William “Bill” WWI Bill was born on November 26, 1884, in Old Meldrum, Scotland and came to Canada in 1907. He worked in the area until enlisting with the 43rd Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Winnipeg in 1915 and then was sent overseas to serve in France and Belgium. In 1917, while overseas, he met and married Jane Ann Coutts (Jean) of Cruden Bay, Scotland. He received the Military Medal and was discharged in 1918. They returned to the Oberon area, south of Neepawa, where they farmed and raised their family. Jean passed away in 1927, leaving three young children. In 1933, Bill remarried to Alberta Sweet and they moved five miles northwest of Neepawa. Bill passed away on December 12, 1956, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa. MILNE, Arthur George WWII George was born on August 5, 1911, in Glamis, Scotland and came to Canada in 1927. He lived in the Arden area and farmed until he enlisted in 1939 and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders from January 18, 1940, to October 19, 1945. After the war, he returned to the area and worked on different farms. Arthur died on August 18, 1985. MITCHELL, Garfield Raymond WWI Garfield was born on February 25, 1893, to Peter and Catherine (McLean) Mitchell in Neepawa, Manitoba. He worked as a bank clerk until his enlistment with the 54th Battalion, Kootenay Rifles of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on June 1, 1915, at Vernon Camp, BC. He served overseas with the 2nd Battalion of the Canadian Infantry. Garfield was killed in action on September 9, 1916, southwest of Courcelette, France and was memorialized at Vimy, Pas de Calais.
