137 The Royal Canadian Legion www.mbnwo.legion.ca MASTERS, John Lewis “Jack” WWII Jack was born on April 17, 1912, in Farnborough, England. He and his family moved to Tilston, Manitoba in 1918 when he was six years old. He volunteered for the army in 1943, and Jack trained and served mostly in Kingston, Ontario. He was discharged in 1946, but re-enlisted later as an Air Cadet Instructor, as a Flying Officer. He served in the Air Cadets for 28 years to help train youth at the Neepawa Air Cadet Squadron. He married Gladys Pearl Maycock, and they had eight children: Robert, Raymond, James, William, Wayne, Frederic, Beverly, and Douglas. They resided the following 66 years in Neepawa. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Jack passed away on March 1, 2005, and was laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery, Lot 82, Block C, Range CG. MATHEWSON, Ernest James WWII Ernest was born on April 3, 1924, in the RM of Langford, the son of Jim and Ruth Mathewson. Ernie was the only child of James and Ruth (Stevens) Matthewson. He enlisted on January 15, 1943, and trained as a signalman in Shilo and Kingston and proceeded overseas in March 1944. He fought in World War II with the Winnipeg Rifles Regiment 100th CABTC Platoon 8. Ernest was wounded in action twice, the first time in France in July 1944 and the second in Germany. He was married to his wife Anne (Gien) for 41 years. Ernie worked for Manitoba Hydro until his retirement in 1983. Ernest passed away on October 3, 2003. MATTHEWS, Arthur WWI Arthur was born on July 14, 1886, to Henry and Martha Matthews in Suffolk, England. He immigrated to Canada about 1910 and settled in Arden. Manitoba. He worked for the area farmers as a farmhand. Arthur enlisted in World War I on December 30, 1914, and served with the 5th Battalion of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He served in England and France and was wounded in France in April 1917. Arthur received his discharge and was sent home to Canada on May 7, 1919. He married Helen Bowie Milne on August 28, 1928, in Arden. Arthur passed away on January 27, 1981, and was buried in the Arden Cemetery.
