95 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca JEFFREY, Arnold Finnemore WWII Arnold was born on December 27, 1916, and was raised on a farm in Holland, Manitoba. He completed a barbering course in Winnipeg where he met his wife, Mary. Together, they moved to Carberry where they jointly ran a hairdressing salon and barbershop. When World War II broke out, he joined the Lake Superior Regiment of the Canadian Army. Arnold was killed in action in France on August 9, 1944. His medals include the 19351945 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He is commemorated at Brettevillesur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. Jeffrey Island in Shethanei Lake was named after him in 1995. JEFFREY, David Stephen WWI David was born on July 25, 1897, the youngest of Angus and Elizabeth Jeffrey’s nine children. He was raised in the Camille district north of Holland, Manitoba. David joined the 1st Depot Canadian Infantry. He died on June 9, 1918, in Brandon while still in training. The commanding officer thought parading the troop in their underwear would “toughen them up”. A true waste of life. In 2017, Jeffrey Creek was named by Holland Legion Branch 121 in his honour. JEFFREY, Elmer Harold WWII Elmer was born on January 14, 1911, and raised on a farm in the Camille district north of Holland, Manitoba. He studied agriculture in university and in his final year joined the army and took officer training. He achieved the rank of Captain with motor transport during World War II. Because of an injury, Elmer remained in Canada throughout the war. After the war, Elmer bought the hardware store in Holland. His wife, Lillian, also operated a coffee shop in Town. They moved to Brandon in 1955 and took over the coffee shop in the bus depot. In 1963, they moved to Vernon, BC where they ran the bus stop and restaurant before moving to Victoria. Elmer passed away on August 17, 1994.
