93 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HURRELL, Robert “Lawrence” WWII Lawrence was born on February 19, 1916, in Arden, Manitoba, son of Robert Hurrell and Annie Smith. He attended school in small schools in the Lansdowne Municipality, and later attended Neepawa Central School and Neepawa Collegiate. He quit school in 1933 and worked at Seaborn’s Bakery. Lawrence enlisted on September 11, 1939 and went overseas with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in 1941. He served as a Warrant Officer Class II / Regimental Quarter Master with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles at the Normandy Landings until VE Day in Holland. When he returned home, he purchased Seaborn’s Bakery, running it until 1973. Lawrence served on town council from 1953 to 1956, appointed town councilor from July to September 1957, and town councilor from 1969 to 1970. He served as Mayor from 1975 until 1978. Lawrence was married to Grace Brooks of Strathclair, Manitoba and they raised two children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch for thirteen years. He passed away suddenly on October 22, 1986 and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa. JACKSON, John Edward WWII John was born on December 24, 1918, the son of J.B. and Pearl Jackson of Eden, Manitoba. He received his education in Eden and then farmed with his father. John enlisted on June 18, 1941 and joined the 70th Field Battery RCA(AF). He was a fully trained field gunner, L.A.A. gunner and driver mechanic. John served in England, Holland, France, and Germany during World War II. He was discharged on May 6, 1946 and returned home to Manitoba to farm. John married Gwendolyn Smith on December 30, 1946. They raised a family of three children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for forty years. John passed away on January 15, 1987. JACKSON, WilliamTempleton WWI William was born on December 30, 1894, to Thomas and Margaret Anne (Montgomery) in the Birnie area, Lansdowne Municipality, near Neepawa, Manitoba. He enlisted on August 18, 1915 with the 105th Battalion of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Forces. He sailed overseas from Halifax on the SS Olympic on September 18, 1916 and served as a Private in France during World War I. William never married and passed away on May 23, 1962 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa Lot 7, Block 7, Range 3 in the Veterans’ Section.
