83 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca HEARN, Neta Irene Neta was born on October 23, 1918, in Kelwood, Manitoba, daughter of Albert and Elsie Hearn. She trained to become an R.N. and joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp as a Nursing Sister in 1942. She was posted overseas to a hospital in Britain and then to a field hospital in Germany. She spent time with the army of occupation in Europe following the end of the war. Neta returned home in 1946 aboard the “Lady Rodney” and received her discharge in 1947. She then began a career in public health. In 1956, she married Harry Spratt and they lived in Kelwood until 1966 when they moved to Victoria, BC. After retiring, they relocated to Sidney, BC. After Harry passed away, Neta moved back to Manitoba and lived in Winnipeg. She passed away on March 22, 2006 in Winnipeg and was buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 37, Block C, Range CG. HENDERSON, John Charles WWII Charlie was born on August 24, 1913, the son of Orr Henderson and Jane Spence Brooks in Franklin, Manitoba. He received his education in Franklin, quitting school at an early age. He worked for many farmers in the area. Charlie enlisted on September 23, 1942 and served as a Corporal with the Saskatoon Light Infantry and the Cameron Highlanders in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean, and Continental Europe. Charlie received a head wound in Italy in 1944. When the war was over, he served for one year in the Occupation Army in Germany and returned home in July 1946. He was discharged on August 8, 1946 with the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After the war, Charlie married Lena L. Turner of Dumfries and raised a family of four, Arlene, Edward, Mavis, and Norman. Charlie farmed in the Glendale District until 1971, when he started to work with the maintenance department at the East View Lodge in Neepawa until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 39 years. Charlie passed away on December 28, 1995. HOBBS, Jack WWII Jack was born on July 23, 1925, to Jack and Rose Hobbs in Riding Mountain, Manitoba. He enlisted in World War II in 1942 and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles during World War II. He went overseas in August 1941 with a signal corps and was wounded in action in Holland. He served until 1946 and was then employed by the CNR for a few years until 1954, when he re-enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served there for another five years. Rifleman Jack Hobbs was slightly wounded in action in Holland. Jack was married three times, his first wife was Marion Hosler of Minnedosa, his second was Anne Intermelia of Winnipeg, and his third was Evelyn from British Columbia. Jack lived in Winnipeg from 1962 until 1968 and then moved to Chemainus, BC on Vancouver Island where he remained until his death on January 1, 2016.
