79 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GRIFFITH, John Douglas “Doug” WWII Doug was born on July 18, 1924, in Neepawa, Manitoba to Bill and Hazel Griffith. He was the second oldest and the only son, having five sisters, Margaret, Jean, Bernice, Joyce, and Joan. He was raised on the farm between Arden and Keyes, Manitoba. He served as a Private overseas during World War II and was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Stonewall, Manitoba. Doug experienced many different fields of employment. His main career was as a heavy equipment operator with Transport Canada for over 25 years. His true passion, however, was farming. He married Jean Watson on June 28, 1952 and together they shared 57 years and raised six children, Beverly, Richard, Robyn, Timothy, Bonnie and Daniel. Doug passed away on October 13, 2009 in Winnipeg. GUINN, James Arnold “Jim” WWII Jim was born on December 22, 1915, in Neepawa, Manitoba. In his younger years, he helped with the NCI hockey team when they won the Manitoba Championship in 1938 and also the intermediate team when they won the Manitoba Championship in 1937. Jim enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on February 3, 1942 and served in England, Ireland and North Africa with 425 Squadron. He received the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp andWar Medal 1939-1945. After the war, he returned to Neepawa where he and two brothers operated the family business “Guinn Bros. Memorials”. Jim retired in 1985. On March 5, 1949, he married Bernice Frazer of Clanwilliam and raised Ken and Marilee. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 45 years. Jim died on July 18, 1991, in Neepawa, Manitoba. GUY, Alvin Lester WWII Alvin was born on February 28, 1922, in Neepawa, Manitoba, the son of Orville Thomas Guy. He served in the Army and was originally with the RWR on April 26, 1944 then to the Winnipeg Grenadiers on April 4, 1946. While with the 1st Battalion in Hong Kong, he was a Prisoner of War until 1943. He married Bertha Simon of Neepawa and they had six children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Neepawa. Alvin died in Brandon, Manitoba on July 30, 1982.
