77 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca GILL, Homer Wilmot WWII Homer, son of Wilmont Gill and Bertha Ann Wray, was born on October 30, 1924, in Arden, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II as an aircrew trainee, first posted to the Edmonton Manning Depot, where he spent three months. Then was posted to Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, for ground school training, then to Mount Jolie, Quebec for air gunner training. Training was discontinued and he was then transferred to the Reserve Air Force. After his discharge from the RCAF he went to teacher’s college at the University of Manitoba, and taught at several schools in Manitoba. He served as adjutant for the Neepawa Air Cadet Squadron and attended several summer camps at Abbotsford and Sea Island, BC. Homer married Wilma Steppler of Neepawa, June 19, 1951. As well as being a respected businessman, he served as town councilor from 1962 to 1970 as well as being Mayor of Neepawa from 1981 to 1983. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 62 years. GRAHAM, Carman Boyd WWII Carman was born on June 1, 1915, in Eden, Manitoba to James Graham and Eleanor Birnie. He was educated in Eden and worked at various jobs before enlisting in Winnipeg with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada in June 1940 and arrived in England in December 1940. Private Carman Graham landed at Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942 and was killed. He is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery at Dieppe. Graham Hill (63 N/7), north of Burntwood Lake was named for Private Carman Boyd Graham. GRENSTED-GILES, Stanley Lawrence WWII Stanley was born on December 18, 1918, in England. He was the son of Charles William Giles and Ada Williams, who came from Kent, England with their family in 1929. Larry enlisted in the Canadian Infantry Corps at No. 10 District Depot in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 9, 1943. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Italy Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and War Medal 1939-1945. He was discharged on January 31, 1946 at No. 10 District Depot in Winnipeg. Stanley passed away on April 10, 1997, in Neepawa.
