69 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca EVANS, Antonius Norman “Tony” WWII Tony was born in Greece in 1909 and immigrated to Canada with his parents, Kina and Naum, in 1922 when he was thirteen years old. They settled in the Minto district for several years before moving to Minnedosa and then later to Neepawa in 1942. Tony was a top amateur wrestler and boxer, winning many championships and even competing in the Olympic trials. He joined the World War II and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery, passing his Artillery examination on April 18, 1940. This gave him the rank of Sergeant. Tony married his wife, Anne Kuculym, on November 1, 1942, in Minnedosa. He and his parents had first operated the Patricia Café in Minnedosa and then Tony purchased and operated the Evans Drive In and gas station for many years. A fire destroyed it in approximately 1967 and he rebuilt as the Chalet Restaurant and Evans Lanes (Bowling Alley). Tony passed away on March 25, 1982 and was buried in the family plot. EVANS, Arthur John WWII Arthur was born on January 16, 1924 to Ernest and Janet (Elmhirst) Evans of Langford District south of Neepawa. He attended Brookdale school. On November 12, 1942, at the age of eighteen, Arthur joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, No. 431 Iroquois Squadron, and was posted overseas. He spent two years as a Mid Upper Gunner and returned to Brandon in 1944, as a Commissioned Officer. Flight Officer Arthur Evans completed 34 missions in both Halifax and Lancaster Bombers. Arthur took over the family farm after his discharge on March 4, 1945 and in 1947, he married Helen Clyde of Neepawa. In 1986, they moved to Stony Mountain, Manitoba where he worked as the Ornamental Groundskeeper for the Penitentiary. In June 1987, due to ill health, they returned to Brookdale where they retired. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23 for 57 years. Arthur passed away on May 6, 2004 in Brandon and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 11, Unit B, West. FEARNS, Daniel David WWII Daniel was born on April 15, 1915, in Liverpool, England and he immigrated to Canada with his widowed mother, Margaret, in 1920. He received his education in Neepawa. Danny served in World War II. He married his wife, Margaret, and they lived in Winnipeg. He worked there for Manitoba Hydro and later he was transferred to Brandon, where he spent many years. He became Vice-President of Plains Western Gas and Utilities Company. Danny passed away on September 8, 1991 in Calgary, Alberta and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa, Lot 8, Block 8, Range 21.
