221 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca WARD (HUTTON), Juanita WWII Juanita was born in 1923 in Bethany, Manitoba. She was eighteen years old and living in Bethany, Manitoba when she joined the Army, Canadian Women’s Army Corps, on September 29, 1944, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She took his basic training in Kitchener, Ontario for four weeks and then took her driver’s course in Woodstock, Ontario for another four weeks. She was stationed in Halifax with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps as a driver. She continued there until the end of the war. Juanita was discharged on July 3, 1946 and returned to civilian life in Minnedosa. She received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. In 1949, she married Andy Ward. They had one daughter, Cherokee (Mendrikis). She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for over 45 years. Juanita passed away in 2010. WHEELER, Lewis Franklin WWII Lewis was born on June 19, 1910. He enlisted in the Army on September 11, 1939, in Manitoba and served with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He was captured at Dieppe in August 1942 and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 33 months. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp and the Dieppe Medal and Clasp. Lewis passed away on March 6, 1992. WILSON, James “Averd” WWII Averd was born on December 22, 1922, in Birtle, Manitoba. He was a keen sportsman, playing forward on his junior hockey team and was active in scouting work. Averd attended public school in Birtle, obtaining his grade 12 standing after enlistment in May 1941. He attended Initial Training School in July -August 1941 in Edmonton, Alberta, then spent 140 hours in a Tiger Moth at No. 19 Elementary Flying School in Virden, MB in SeptemberOctober 1941. In January 1942, he attended No. 4 Service Flying Training School in Saskatoon, SK. Averd was posted to 23 Operational Training Unit, 419 Squadron, Bomber Command at RAF base Pershore Worcs. Averd was killed on January 29, 1943, at the age of twenty and one month, when his Wellington aircraft collided with another Wellington over Honington Airfield, Suffolk in a cloud during a daylight navigational exercise. He was buried in All Saints Churchyard, Honington, Suffolk.Wilson Narrows in Allan Lake was named after him in 1995. His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal, and War Medal 1939-1945.
