209 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca SMITH, Cameron Murray “Cam” WWII Cam was born on February 5, 1921, to Duncan and Margaret (Neilands) Smith in Arden, Manitoba. He attended school in Arden and then worked on the home farm and as a hired hand for area farmers.When World War II broke out, Cam joined the Armed Forces in 1944 and spent two years serving his country. He trained in Canada and Britian to drive armoured tanks and went on to serve in Holland and Germany. In 1948, he married Noreen (Rogers). They farmed for 23 years in Salisbury district raising three children. They sold the farm and moved to Neepawa in 1970 and worked as a custodian at Kellington and Neepawa High School. Cam passed away on November 10, 2004 in Neepawa and was buried in Riverside Cemetery. SOUTHERN, Edward G. “Ted” WWII Ted served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 to 1945. Prior to this, he had been a motor mechanic in Chater, Manitoba. From January until April 1945, Japan sent incendiary balloons on the easterly air currents, some 30,000 feet above sea level, to the west coast of Canada and the USA. The purpose of these fugo bombs was to start fires. This attack on Canada was kept secret from the public until recently. During this time, Ted Southern was deployed to northern British Columbia and the Yukon to help spot and put out these fires. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. SPENCE, James E. WWII James was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 1912. He served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe during World War II. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence Medal, Italy Star, 1939-1945 Star, and France and Germany Star. James passed away in 1981.
