201 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca RUSNICK, Nicholas WWII Nicholas was born in Fort Williams, Ontario in 1926. He enlisted in the Amy and served as a Lance Corporal with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He received the War Medal 1939-1945, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Defence Medal, and Court Mounted Medal. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kelowna Branch 26 for 44 years. Nicholas passed away in 2023. SANGSTER, William “Bill” WWI William was born on December 16, 1897, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, son of John and Helen (née Bruce) Sangster. Bill, Willi as Scottish boy, had five brothers and two sisters. He and three brothers served in World War I, one brother being too young, and other older was spared for farming. Bill enlisted in British Army with Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery, RHA and RFA, 18 Pounder Gun Brigade. From England, he transferred to France on his eighteenth birthday as a signaller. Once, moving out under fire, horses were killed and Bill had to cut them loose on the run. As a Signaller, William had to crawl into No Man’s Land and signal back to Artillery Guns, at first flags and later wired telegraph, sometimes fixing broken lines under fire. All his life, Bill never forgot his Morse Code. One time when he was sent on another mission, his replacement was killed. Bill was gassed and got permanent scarring on his legs. He transferred to Army Reserve in March 1919, then immigrated to Canada in 1920. Farming near Kenton, Manitoba with older brother Alec, Bill started his own farm in 1924. Bill married Edna Robinson, from nearby Shilo, in 1937. They had one daughter and three sons. Bill was awarded two World War I medals. He supported community including churches, Legion, and all fund raisers. William died in 1982, predeceased by daughter Carol, and since wife Edna, and oldest son Murray. William, Edna, and Carol rest in Greenwood Cemetery near Kenton, and Murray nearby Shilo. Son Harvey still farms the same family farm near Kenton, and Albert is retired in Brandon, Manitoba.
