197 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca RICHARDS, Frederick Nelson WWII Following Fred’s enlistment in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, he trained at Ft. Osbourne Barracks in Winnipeg, and Camp Shilo, Manitoba. He served overseas from December 1942 to December 1945 in England, Italy, France, Holland and Germany. Private Frederick Richards received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Defence of Britain Medal, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and War Medal 1939-1945. Following his discharge, he married Mabel Bertram on April 20, 1946. They had four children: Charlie, Irene, Janice, and Jim. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Minnedosa Branch for twenty years. Fred farmed in the Clanwilliam district until his death in May 1966. He was buried in Clanwilliam Cemetery. RITCHEY, Thomas WWII Thomas was born on September 29, 1894, to John W. and Marion (McKinnon) Ritchey in the Inkerman district of the Langford Municipality. He enlisted at the age of 21 with the 200th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served overseas in France and in Belgium, with the 107th Battalion of the Royal Canadian Engineers. He fought in the trenches on the continent. In capturing an enemy trench, Canadians could meet the enemy face to face. Bayonets were used in close combat. Tom was wounded in action and some shrapnel was embedded in bone that could never be removed. Following his discharge in 1919, he cleared land in Kelwood. In 1923, he bought land on the Arden Ridge where he farmed for 58 years. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Arden Branch 144. Tom died on January 7, 1981 on his farm on the Arden Ridge (19-14-13). He was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa (Lot 20 – Block 8 – Range 22). ROSE, Cecil McLachlan WWII Cecil was born on June 25, 1905 and was raised in Basswood, Manitoba. He married Rachael Margaret Bowley of Binscarth on October 17, 1942, in Binscarth. Cecil enlisted in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, Canadian Active Army, at #10 District Depot, Winnipeg, on March 12, 1943, at the age of 38. He took most of his training at Camp Shilo and served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean area, and Central Europe. Cecil was on a Bren gun crew. He got jaundice while in Italy and spent some time in hospital. When he got out of hospital, he was put on kitchen duty. During the Italian campaign, he walked with his unit across Italy, and then through much of Belgium, Holland, and into Germany. He was discharged on February 12, 1946. Cecil received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, 19391945 Star, and War Medal 1939-1945. He and Rachael farmed for several years on the Stewart Fraser farm in the Basswood area. They raised a family of two boys and one girl, Malcolm Arthur, Garnet Stewart, and Sandra Louise. Cecil died in 1980 and is buried in Basswood Cemetery.
