WWII George was born on January 19, 1920, to Robert and Mary Jane (McGillivray) McNarland in McCreary, Manitoba. In 1939, when the war broke out, George enlisted in Winnipeg with the Fort Gary Horse Militia. He was sent overseas in 1941 and served as a Trooper until the war ended in 1945. After his return to Canada, he went back to McCreary to farm. George married Theresa Krieser in 1948 and they lived in Churchill and Calgary before moving to Neepawa. He worked for NeepawaGladstone Co-op in Neepawa and retired in 1985. George passed away on January 21, 2003 in Neepawa and was buried at Riverside Cemetery. McTAVISH, Donald John WWII Donald was born in 1913 to Henry J. and Lillian M. McTavish, who lived in the Rapid City area. He served in the Army with the Lord Strathcona Horse as a Trooper. Donald died on September 24, 1944, at the age of 31, and is commemorated at the Cesena War Cemetery in Italy. His niece wrote in October 2001: “Don was born in Winnipeg on July 25, 1913, travelled to Saskatchewan with his family, and finally settled in the Rapid city area to farm. Don a cousin, Ernie Adly, met two hours before Don was killed. They planned to meet on their next leave, but it was not to be. He was killed on September 24, 1944, when his Algonquin II tank was blown up.” McTavish Bay in Nueltin Lake was named after him in 1995 in northern Manitoba. MIDDLETON, William “Bill” WWI Bill was born on November 26, 1884, in Old Meldrum, Scotland and came to Canada in 1907. He worked in the area until enlisting with the 43rd Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Winnipeg in 1915 and then was sent overseas to serve in France and Belgium. In 1917, while overseas, he met and married Jane Ann Coutts (Jean) of Cruden Bay, Scotland. Private William Middleton received the Military Medal and was discharged in 1918. They returned to the Oberon area, south of Neepawa, where they farmed and raised their family. Jean passed away in 1927, leaving three young children. In 1933, Bill remarried to Alberta Sweet, and they moved five miles northwest of Neepawa. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Bill passed away on December 12, 1956, and was buried in Riverside Cemetery in Neepawa.
