127 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca MARKLE, Orin Clemens WWII Orin was born on May 13, 1920, in Shoal Lake, Manitoba. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. Pilot Officer Markle died after his Beaufort aircraft failed to return to RAF Portreath from a delivery flight to Rabat-Sale Morocco on March 7, 1944, lost without a trace. Orin is commemorated at the Runnymede War Memorial and on the Shoal Lake War Memorial. He was the son of Mervyn and Lydia Markle and brother to ten siblings. His brother, Jack, was also lost with the Royal Canadian Air Force overseas. Six brothers and one sister all joined the armed forces of Canada. MATTHEWS, Arthur WWI Arthur was born on July 14, 1886, to Henry and Martha Matthews in Suffolk, England. He immigrated to Canada about 1910 and settled in Arden, Manitoba where he worked for the area farmers as a farmhand. Arthur enlisted in World War I on December 30, 1914, and served with the 5th Battalion of the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He served as a Private in England and France and was wounded in France in April 1917. Arthur received his discharge and was sent home to Canada on May 7, 1919. He married Helen Milne on August 28, 1928, in Arden. He was a member of the Arden Branch 144. Arthur passed away on January 27, 1981, and was buried in the Arden Cemetery. McCONAGHY, Arthur Francis WWII Arthur was born on May 28, 1896, to Archie and Minnie (Coad) McConaghy in Neepawa, Manitoba. On September 24, 1914, he enlisted in the 34th Battalion of the Fort Garry Horse in Valcartier, Quebec. He was later transferred to the Lord Strathcona Horse and sent overseas. He landed in England in October 1914 and stayed there until the first of May 1915 when they were taken to France. Private Arthur McConaghy was ‘killed in action’ at his first battle in Festubert, four days before his birthday. He was presumed dead on May 25, 1915. His body was not found, and he is memorialized at the Vimy Memorial in France.
