113 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KULBACKI, Donald WWII Donald was born on June 2, 1920, in Polonia, Manitoba, the fourth child of Anthony and Josephine Kulbacki. As a young man, Donald farmed near Polonia. He attended school and at age fourteen started working on various threshing gangs around the district and hauling logs out of Riding Mountain Park, besides helping on the family farm. He was drafted into the army in World War II, and was trained in Portage and Winnipeg, Manitoba and Terrace, British Columbia. Private Donald Kulbacki served with the Second Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers in the Pacific Ocean, including Kiska, in the Aleutian Islands, where the Japanese were entrenched. He spent four years in the army and was awarded a Good Conduct Badge. Upon discharge, Donald returned to Polonia where he married Mary Kasprick, had five children, and farmed. Donald passed away on January 24, 1995. KULBACKI, Joseph WWII Joseph was born on August 30, 1920, in Polonia, Manitoba, the fifth child of Ksaver and Lily Kulbacki’s twelve children. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941, and was posted to the 2nd Battalion of the Winnipeg Grenadiers in 1942. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, North Pacific Area, and Continental Europe. In 1943, he was sent to the Aleutian Islands where he spent seven months, returning to Canada on Christmas Eve 1943. After leaving the Aleutians, he was posted to the Light Brigade of the Lake Superior Regiment in 1944 and went overseas where he served in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and ended up in Germany in December 1944. When the war ended, he was posted to the Provost Corps and then returned to Canada in January 1946. On October 21, 1946, Joseph married Charlotte Kasprick and they remained together until her passing in 2012. Together, they farmed and then owned and operated the hotel/restaurant/pool room in Eden. For many years, he put in the ice at the Eden skating and curling rinks. He was a bartender, school custodian, and for many years, a volunteer firefighter for the Rosedale Fire Department. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Neepawa Branch 23. Joseph passed away on June 28, 2017. KULBACKI, Paul Joseph WWII Paul was born on April 28, 1916, to Anthony and Josephine Kulbacki in Polonia. He was the second oldest in a family of ten children therefore the responsibility of helping his father fell upon him, limiting his education, attending school until grade 5. He continued to help out at home until he met the love of his life, Frances Kuharski, and married her on October 19, 1943. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage until her passing in October 2011. Paul served in the Army with the 2nd Battalion Winnipeg Grenadiers in the Pacific, and in Kiska in the Aleutian Islands for four years during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal. Paul and Frances settled in their first home in a log house just north of Polonia where they raised their family. In 1957, they moved to the Springhill area where they lived and farmed until they decided it was time to move to town, where they settled in Kinsmen Kourts in October 2006. Paul passed away on March 7, 2013.
