111 The Royal Canadian Legion MANITOBA & NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO COMMAND www.mbnwo.ca KIRSILA, Ensio W. WWII Ensio was born in Evijärvi, Finland in 1923. He served in the Navy on HMCS Chippawa during World War II. He was a signalman on a destroyer in the Atlantic, escorting convoys halfway across the Atlantic then escorting returning ships back to Canada. These escorts were constantly being hunted by Nazi U-boats. Ensio saw and heard things he was sworn to keep secret especially about U-boats so as not to alarm other sailors or soldiers or relay sensitive or secret information. Ensio passed away in 2015. KOZMENIUK, Dmytro Michael WWII Dmytro was born on November 15, 1917, in Glen Elden, Saskatchewan, to Michael Nicholas and Katherine Kozmeniuk. Prior to his enlistment, his trade was salesclerk and farmer. He enlisted in the Army in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 19, 1942. He completed basic training at 121 BTC on October 27, 1942, and advanced sapper training as per sapper syllabus on December 24, 1942. He was posted to T.S. available for draft P.T.O. 242 on September 29, 1943. Dmytro was discharged in Regina, Saskatchewan on February 20, 1945, after having served in Canada during World War II. He lived in Danbury, Saskatchewan where he farmed and operated the general store and the lumber mill. He moved toYorkton, Saskatchewan in 1962 and to Roblin, MB in 1963. Dmytro operated the hardware store. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Roblin Branch 24. Dmytro lived in Roblin until his death in 1999. KRYSOWATY, Stephan “Sam” WWII Sam was born on March 31, 1915, in Rossburn, Manitoba. He served with the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps as a private with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. On May 23, 1944, Stephan died during a major offensive on the Hitler Line west of Monte Cassino in Italy. He was 29 years old. He left behind a wife, Mary Krysowaty, and two sons, Frank and Victor. Frank and Victor grew up in Shoal Lake and Newdale, Manitoba. Later, they moved to Winnipeg where they reside today. Stephan Krysowaty is commemorated at the Cassino Cemetery in Italy, the Lenore War Memorial and the Shoal Lake War Memorial At a dedication service at the Prairie Mountain Museum for the fallen of Shoal Lake and area on November 4, 2024, both Frank and Victor were in attendance along with other relatives of the fallen heroes.
